Severe Weather Sweeps Across India with Cyclonic Systems and Heatwaves
India is currently dealing with a double whammy of severe weather conditions. Thanks to a mix of cyclonic circulations and trough systems, the country is seeing a striking contrast in its weather patterns, with certain regions facing incessant rainfall and thunderstorms, while others endure scorching heatwaves.
In the South Peninsular part of the country—particularly in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and South Karnataka—residents are coping with heavy rain showers, clocking in at about 40-50 mm daily, accompanied by thunderstorms and brisk winds reaching 40-50 km/h. This stormy spell is expected to last from April 4 to April 6, causing headaches for daily commuters and potentially waterlogging in some areas.
Growing concerns are also evident in the Northeastern states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. Between April 5 and April 6, these regions are predicted to experience similar turbulent weather—including hailstorms—that could severely impact crops. Such hazardous conditions necessitate all the more vigilance from farmers to mitigate potential damage.
Heatwaves and Rising Temperatures in Northwest India
While parts of the country are wet, areas in Northwest India, such as Rajasthan and Gujarat, are roasting under the sun. Heatwave alerts have cast a shadow over these areas, with temperatures expected to span from 40 to 42°C from April 6 to April 9. The Saurashtra & Kutch regions, in particular, are bracing themselves between April 4 and April 8, while heat alerts are also on for West Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat from April 6 to April 8.
Not to be left behind in the weather drama, cities in Delhi/NCR are experiencing a spike in temperatures, ranging from 37-39°C on April 4, set to scale up to 38-40°C by April 6. The skies may be clear, but the strong winds picking up to 15-35 km/h ensure there's no respite from the heat.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded off warnings to farmers about safeguarding their crops from potential hailstorm threats and advised residents in soaring hot areas to stay hydrated.
Moreover, along the coastlines such as the Konkan & Goa, residents should gear up for hot and humid weather conditions from April 5 to April 9, making it essential to stay cool and monitor the weather updates frequently.
